It’s that time of year again when basketball and brackets take center stage. This March Madness, we’ll be pulling for our favorite teams and celebrating the players for their hard work and commitment – both on and off the court. And, while we may have differences in our final bracket picks, we know one thing is certain: many of the players we’ll be cheering for are student athletes who were given the opportunity to earn a quality education based on their athletic talents.
Many of these student athletes come from challenged backgrounds – not much different than my own. As many know, I grew up in Detroit, but thankfully, I was both afforded opportunities to attend a great college as a result of my basketball talents.
While a select few are able to capitalize on their individual athletic skills, for far too many students that simply is not an option. Sadly, in the United States, too many children do not have these same opportunities due to gaps in their educational experience that lead to a lack of fundamental knowledge and skills – those same skills that are necessary to be accepted into college and to succeed in life.
KLAS-Vegas - News Now: February 3, 2014
LAS VEGAS -- Even though the Clark County School District is the fifth largest district in the country, it still has fewer than 20 charter schools to give parents more options in their kids education.
Now, former tennis pro Andre Agassi is stepping up to build more of these charter schools across the country, including right here in Las Vegas.
His newest venture is the Doral Academy at Ft. Apache and Flamingo roads, which opened a few months ago. The waiting list is close to 3,000 students.
Doral Academy, which focuses on learning through art and music, is planning to expand, and Agassi says he will be there to support it.
The academy's curriculum appealed to Costel Ciobanu and his wife who say they don't regret enrolling their 6-year-old daughter, Alexa, at this school.
"She is singing all day. She is crying to stay in school. She doesn't want to come home," Ciabanu said.
This is the kind of passion for learning that Andre Agassi says he wants to see. He toured Doral Academy with Gov. Brian Sandoval Monday morning.

One of my favorite events of the year is the ESPY Awards. It is a fantastic opportunity for sports stars, celebrities and fans to join forces and celebrate the athletic achievements of the past year – And this year was no exception!
I was especially excited for this year’s event as I had the opportunity to co-host “Champions for Choice in Education” with Jalen Rose and Kevin P. Chavous. The event allowed us to educate fellow celebrities and athletes about the importance of educational choice.
An estimated 300 people, including some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment, came out to the WP-24 Restaurant at the Ritz Carlton for the Champions for Choice in Education event. I was so grateful to see so many friends, athletes, stars and education advocates all in one room. You can see some of the pictures from the event on AFC's Facebook page.
Champions for Choice in Education are committed to ensuring that every child - no matter their zip code, no matter the parent's income, and no matter the color of their skin - has access to an excellent education.
